Every summer, youth from St. Mary’s and St. Vitus Slovenian School, (Cleveland) as well as Slovenska Pristava members, come together for a week on the grounds of Slovenska Pristava for CAMP PRISTAVA. The campers all share one common bond - their Slovenian heritage.
As one of the activities this year at Camp Pristava, (under the direction of Sophia Tromba, head counselor) it was suggested by one of the counselors, Markus Simicak, that a connection be made with youth from Slovenia.
A zoom meeting was arranged between campers from Jezikovno Mesto and Camp Pristava.
Jezikovno Mesto has an English summer camp which takes place near Lake Bohinj for children ages 7-15.
Youth from both camps took turns asking questions about each other’s camps, as well sharing facts about Slovenia and Cleveland/USA.
For example, Mitja and Jure from JM camp shared that their favorite food at their camp is šmoren (similar to a thick pancake, which is cut up in pieces and sometimes contains a fruit).
Weather was another topic, in which both camps seem to be having a hot week, with some periods of rain.
A CP camper asked if there is a swimming pool at their camp in Slovenija, to which Jure replied that they swim in beautiful Lake Bohinj.
On the topic of sports, a favorite player Luka Dončić was mentioned, which prompted smiles and applause from both sets of campers.
To close the hour+ long conversation, the CP campers sang their camp song, as well as a collective “hvala lepa and lahko noč” to the campers in Slovenija.
